Elements and Triplicity

The four elemental groups

Triplicity groups the twelve signs into four elements, with three signs in each group. Fire, earth, air and water describe traditional symbolic qualities rather than physical forces or a person's chemical composition.

Fire and earth

Fire signs are commonly associated with initiative, assertion and active expression. Earth signs are associated with practical work, resources and tangible results. In occupational descriptions these may suggest themes such as direction, implementation or material activity, but many occupations can fit the same broad symbolism.

Air and water

Air signs emphasise exchange, information and coordination. Water signs emphasise receptivity, emotional involvement and sensitivity. These descriptions may contribute to a discussion of communication, relationships or environment after the relevant KP house links have been considered.

Their place in KP interpretation

The element of a relevant cusp or significator can qualify a description of style or setting. It does not independently determine success, a profession, a travel route or an event date. For example, an air sign connected with a professional question may support a communication-related description, while employment itself still depends on the adopted cusp and significator analysis.

Element should also be separated from morphology. Aquarius is an air sign despite its water-bearer symbol. Capricorn remains an earth sign even where a classical structural scheme describes its latter half as aquatic. Elemental labels do not supply medical diagnoses.
