Quadruplicity and Modes of Signs

Movable fixed and common signs

Quadruplicity divides the zodiac into three groups of four. The groups are movable or chara, fixed or sthira, and common or dvisvabhava. Cardinal and mutable are familiar Western equivalents of movable and common. The word common describes a mode of expression, not an ordinary or unimportant sign.

Traditional descriptive roles

Movable signs are associated with initiation and transition. Fixed signs are associated with continuity and consolidation. Common signs are associated with adjustment, alternation and flexibility. Each element contains one sign from each mode, so Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are all fire signs while expressing different modes.

Application to events

Modes can add context to a discussion of a change of residence, professional continuity or repeated adjustment. Their role is descriptive and conditional. A movable sign does not provide a fixed number of days until an event, and a fixed sign does not prevent a relocation by itself.

Common signs are sometimes discussed in relation to plurality, but their presence alone does not establish two marriages, two jobs or a particular mental state. Any such interpretation needs the full question, relevant house connections and a clearly stated rule.

Badhaka classification

The traditional badhaka house depends on the mode of the ascendant sign: eleventh for movable, ninth for fixed and seventh for common. This is a separate technical convention. It does not make those houses universally unfavourable in every question.
