The Twelve Zodiac Signs
The twelve signs and their rulers
Each sign occupies a fixed 30-degree sector in the adopted zodiac. Its ruler, element and mode provide basic reference information. The numbered order of signs must be distinguished from the numbered houses of a particular chart.
| Sign | Sanskrit name | Absolute start | Standard ruler | Element | Mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mesha | 0 degrees | Mars | Fire | Movable |
| Taurus | Vrishabha | 30 degrees | Venus | Earth | Fixed |
| Gemini | Mithuna | 60 degrees | Mercury | Air | Common |
| Cancer | Karka / Kataka | 90 degrees | Moon | Water | Movable |
| Leo | Simha | 120 degrees | Sun | Fire | Fixed |
| Virgo | Kanya | 150 degrees | Mercury | Earth | Common |
| Libra | Tula | 180 degrees | Venus | Air | Movable |
| Scorpio | Vrischika | 210 degrees | Mars | Water | Fixed |
| Sagittarius | Dhanu | 240 degrees | Jupiter | Fire | Common |
| Capricorn | Makara | 270 degrees | Saturn | Earth | Movable |
| Aquarius | Kumbha | 300 degrees | Saturn | Air | Fixed |
| Pisces | Meena | 330 degrees | Jupiter | Water | Common |
Sign and house are separate categories
Capricorn is the tenth sign; it is not automatically the tenth house of every chart. Virgo is the sixth sign; it is not automatically an employment or illness house. House occupation depends on the chart's actual cusps, and house ownership depends on the sign containing each cusp.
Additional sign descriptions
Traditional classifications include morphology, voice or mute labels, fruitful or barren terminology and rising characteristics. These descriptions differ across authors and have specific historical contexts. They should not be treated as factual labels of a person's fertility, speech, morality or health.
Coordinate example
A position at absolute longitude 287 degrees is Capricorn 17 degrees. Its ruler is Saturn, element earth and mode movable. Its classical structural category is the aquatic second half. The star and sub-lords require a further boundary calculation; none of the sign labels alone identifies them.
